Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is when a man cannot get or keep an erection of a quality to complete intercourse. This can happen to all men from time to time, and isn't necessarily a concern. But if ED occurs regularly, it can affect your relationship, cause stress and loss of self-esteem.
Talking about ED to your healthcare provider may seem awkward or petty, but should be discussed if it is a regular occurence. It can be a sign of other underlying conditions that need treatment such as diabetes or heart disease.
The process for a man to get an erection is complex, requiring hormones, emotions, blood vessels, nerves and the brain.
ED can be caused by many things including:
- Anxiety/Stress/Depression and their Treatments
- Heart Disease
- High Blood Pressure
- Diabetes
- Obesity
- Medications
- Alcohol, Tobacco, Drug Use
- Neurologic Conditions (Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, Injury/Trauma)
- Hormonal Conditions (Low Testosterone, Hypothyroidism)
